Mayor Meng FoonTrustee


Meng was a market gardener for 30 years before being elected as a councillor for Gisborne District Council in 1998.

In 2001, he was elected Gisborne Mayor, the first of Chinese descent, and is now in his sixth term. 

Fluent in English, Cantonese and Māori, Meng is a trustee of the Eastland Community Trust and chairs the Treaty of Waitangi Day Fund, Special Olympics Committee, Tairawhiti Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, City Safe Inc. and the Gisborne Chinese Association.     

He is a past chair and current member of Gisborne/Tairāwhiti Rugby League Committee.
